Acquire to Draw Eyes (Convincingly!):
The 6 Most Common Mistakes to Avoid
What does it take to learn to draw eyes convincingly and realistically?
Every bit a follow-up to my step by step heart drawing tutorial, in this article I'll point out what I've noticed to be the vi near common mistakes that detract from the realism and naturalism of an centre drawing.

Larn to Draw Optics
Fault 1: Assuming that eyes are a generic almond shape (and cartoon them that way!)
Let me clarify – it'south non that eyes aren't at all almond-shaped. The upshot is that assuming that eyes are almond-shaped often leads to generic-looking drawings. If yous have watched Lesson 2 of my Mini-Course , yous know how important the specificity of shapes is to creating a likeness of your subject.
Eyes are no exception! To acquire to draw eyes convincingly, so that look recognizably like those of our model, we must pay attending to where specific angle changes occur. Look how distinctly unique all of these eye shapes are:
Learn to draw eyes convincingly past paying attending to the specificity of each private center shape
Simply 'almond-shaped'? I call up not! 'Almond-shaped' doesn't practise justice to the complexity of this feature.
The all-time way to avoid this pitfall is to brainstorm your cartoon with directly lines, with which y'all tin signal the specific angle changes that occur throughout the eye (as I practise in my eye drawing tutorial).
Mistake 2: Leaving the 'white of the eye' completely white
The sclera, more than commonly known as the 'white of the middle', is rarely completely white!
Because the eyeball is a sphere, the sclera ordinarily has a gradation and a range of values. It is essential to discover and depict this range of values in society to create the illusion that the eyeball is, indeed, spherical and dimensional. Take a wait at the many subtle value shifts present in the scleras of these eyes:
Even when the sclera looks white at showtime glance, upon closer observation you will brainstorm to see differences in value. For example, in the centre to a higher place discover the gradual gradations from the lighter eye of the eye, to a slight shadow towards both corners of the eye. There is also a slightly darker value just to the right of the iris, and a deep shadow cast by the eyelashes.
Learn to depict optics assuredly by noticing the subtle value changes within the sclera
In other cases, one half of the sclera may exist more than evidently in shadow. Even so, even when this is the case, find the gradations and value differences within the shadow area!
Mistake 3: Non noticing the 'thickness' of the upper and lower eyelids (not creating a front and elevation airplane)
The upper and lower eyelids have a 'thickness'. This gives them ii important planes that nosotros need to find and depict in our drawings.
The upper eyelid has a front plane and a bottom plane. The lower eyelid has a front plane and a acme aeroplane. How much we see of these planes depends mostly on the position of the model'due south head (though factors such as the shape of the eye, age and the tautness of the peel tin play a role too).
When observing an eye, it can be catchy to determine what it is that nosotros're seeing (not to mention to depict it accurately!) This is why we study its construction – and then that nosotros know what to await for when observing the eye, and are then able to 'hint' at its planes and features subtly in our drawings.
Error 4: Cartoon details before establishing the value construction
There are then many seductive details in an middle! Of course we all want to describe eyelashes, eyebrows and the cute, radiating fibres of an iris. However, these details will never brand your cartoon look realistic if you have non first successfully established a value structure.
'Value construction' refers to where the light, half-tone and shadow areas are on your subject , every bit depicted below. Lookout man Lesson 5 of my Mini-Form to acquire how to establish an constructive value structure in your drawing!
When drawing an center, remember to work 'from general to specific', and to first address the larger value relationships before delving into the details.
Fault v: Not grouping eyelashes and eyebrows (and cartoon eyelashes too evenly!)
Eyebrows and eyelashes are rarely evenly spaced and the same length.
To draw them realistically, instead of drawing in each hair individually, look for groupings or shapes to simplify them into, equally in the epitome below:
So, add some stray strands where they are almost noticeable, and voila! Notice that where there are several individual eyelashes (like the bottom set of eyelashes in the image above), they are not evenly spaced, are not the aforementioned length, do not face the same management, and accept various angle changes! They're not perfect! Cartoon them this way will add together naturalism to your portrait.

Error six: Making all the edges sharp/not varying the edge quality throughout your drawing
Look at the variety of edge qualities in the centre below!
A common fault when drawing eyes is making all of the edges precipitous. Finding your sharpest edges, softest edges, and dissimilar degrees of edge qualities betwixt the two extremes is primal to creating depth, dimension and realism in your eye drawing.
At that place you take it! The 6 well-nigh common mistakes when drawing optics.
